Thank you for volunteering
Our PTA offers many wonderful social and educational opportunities for our children thanks to the dedication and commitment of our parents and staff. We encourage your involvement in the PTA in any way you can (even if only for a few hours). Your support benefits our children in many ways.
Visit the Member Volunteer Page (need username/password) to volunteer for events, programs, or on going positions.
Resources for Volunteers:
- On Line Resources - If you have already started volunteering, there are helpful guidelines and tips at the California State PTA web site, www.capta.org. This web site includes a summary of PTA's insurance, and the PTA "Toolkit" which outlines ways to run safe, secure and fun events, programs and fundraisers. One helpful section is on PTA Communications. Every PTA Chair is encouraged to review this section before starting a new project.
- Training - The next free volunteer training session is on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008. For details visit www.capta6.org. All our PTA leaders are encouraged to attend training. You must register in advance.
- Forms - There are also some standard forms needed by many volunteers on the Reference Materials page including check reimbursement forms.
HOW DO YOU VOLUNTEER FOR THE PTA BOARD?
If you would like to be on the PTA Board, let the Parliamentarian or a member of the nominating committee know of your interest. Board members are either nominated by this committee, or by another PTA member at a PTA meeting in the Spring. We invite you to explore this opportunity as it’s very fulfilling contributing so much to improving the lives of our children. You can even nominate yourself during a meeting.
You have to join PTA and be a member for 30 days before you are eligible to be elected to the board.
WANT TO BE ON THE COMMITTEE THAT NOMINATES THE NEW BOARD?
Here is some information for our new nominating committee which is the group that nominates the future board. This is taken from the 2007-2008 school year version of the Marshall Lane PTA Bylaws and the PTA Toolkit which is online at www.capta.org. Note that Bylaws are updated every one or two years and a detail or two on the current version may have changed. Allow this to serve as a general guideline.
The Parliamentarian coordinates and leads the process of finding and appointing the new nominating committee, and then the PTA members actually vote to elect this committee. This happens around the December time frame. Please tell the Parliamentarian if you are interested!
1. Nominations for office shall be made by a nominating committee which shall be elected by the association.
2. The nominating committee shall be elected at least 2 months prior to the annual election meeting. The committee shall serve until the annual election meeting.
3. The nominating committee shall be composed of 5 (five) members, with the 2 (two) alternates, all of whom shall be members of the association. The principal of the school, or a faculty representative appointed by the principal, if not an elected member of the committee, shall serve in an advisory capacity. . .The committee shall elect its own chairman.
4. No member shall serve on the nominating committee for 2 consecutive years.
5. Immediately upon its election the parliamentarian shall meet with the nominating committee to set the date of its first meeting.
6. Alternates shall not attend meetings unless an elected member cannot be present at the first meeting. In that event, the alternate becomes the permanent member, replacing the elected member until such time as the committee is discharged of its duties (at the time of the election.)
7. The report of the nominating committee shall be submitted to the membership at least 30 days prior to the annual election meeting. At the annual election meeting in April additional nominations can be called for from the floor.
8. Only those persons who are eligible and who have signified their consent to serve if elected shall be nominated for or elected to office.
9. PTA Board members/Officers serve for 1 year, starting on July 1 and ending on June 30th.
10. The president-elect may call meetings of the officers-elect and the principal of the school . . . as necessary to ratify the appointments of the appointed officers and committee chairman, to fill vacancies on the board-elect and to make plans for the coming year’s work.
11. The board-elect cannot do any “official” Board voting until after their terms have officially started. They can start informal planning before their terms start.
